For users wanting the best colour output from their monitor, IPS-type panels are attractive choices. An increasing number of IPS-type models are now available with high refresh rates, broadening the appeal of such models amongst gamers. The ASUS PG259Q, of the TUF Gaming series, makes use of such a panel – with a Full HD resolution. The aesthetics are in keeping with others in the series. Not too much of a ‘loud and proud’ gaming aesthetic, rather what might be described as quite a ‘sensible’ design. This model has fairly slender bezels at all four sides, particularly the top and sides which feature a dual-stage design. This combines a slim panel border that’s flush with the rest of the screen with a slender hard plastic outer component. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by pressable buttons and a joystick at the rear of the monitor, towards the bottom right corner as viewed from the front.
The monitor uses a 24.5” 1920 x 1080 (Full HD) IPS-type (In-Plane Switching or similar panel) with 144Hz refresh rate. More specifically an AU Optronics AHVA (Advanced Hyper-Viewing Angle) panel. This offers a 1000:1 static contrast ratio, 178°/178° horizontal/vertical viewing angles and adopts a matte anti-glare screen surface. 8-bit colour is supported alongside Adaptive-Sync (includes AMD FreeSync), with a 48 – 144Hz refresh rate with LFC support assumed. A flicker-free backlight is employed, with an ~sRGB colour gamut, whilst ‘Ultra-Low Blue’ Low Blue Light (LBL) settings are included for enhanced viewing comfort. A 1ms MPRT response time is specified, using the ELMB (Extreme Low Motion Blur) strobe backlight setting which can be used instead of Adaptive-Sync. The included stand is fully adjustable and can be removed to make way for an alternative 100 x 100mm VESA compatible solution, if preferred.
